FAST & FURIOUS 5: VIP Screening at SM Megamall

Stanley Chi’s Suplado Tips Book Overview

The humor book Suplado Tips, written by Stanley Chi, takes humor to a new level as it regales readers with witticisms that revolve around one conviction: suplado is the new sexy.




Stanley Chi, a celebrated humorist, is the man behind that notorious idea. Suplado Tips, Chi’s fourth book, is a compilation of smart-alecky tips on how to assert oneself with an air of cockiness. One suplado tip advises, “Kung may nagtampo sayo dahil na-sampolan mo ng supladong hirit, hiritan mo ng, ‘Hindi ko na problema yan!’ (If someone resents you for your snide retort, just say, ‘That’s no longer my problem!’)”



The book, just like any monumental discovery, started as a completely random and impromptu post on Facebook. “That online post turned out to be my very first suplado tip,” Chi said. “I toyed with the idea that being cocky can be a means of getting what you want – or at least a way to delude yourself that you already have everything in the first place.” Soon after he shared several of his suplado tips on Facebook, they spread like wildfire.



“Many people dream of sticking it to their bosses or giving someone they hate a nasty remark or two, but they often resort to doing none of the above. Filipinos tend to be non-confrontational, avoiding conflicts as much as they can. Suplado Tips is the funny respite that people with a grudge have been looking for,” Chi said.



“Reading a suplado tip is like acting out a fantasy. The book gives you many scenarios where being standoffish gives you the upper hand, something which otherwise would not happen in real life,” Chi added.



Having been released nationwide in National Bookstore and Fully Booked outlets just last March, some stores have already reported a shortage of the book. Suplado Tips has reaped a cult following even before the book’s release, with readers already scouring bookstores months before the book made it to the shelves.



Suplado Tips has spurred on a series of video testimonials, all of which hailed the book in comical embroidery. Ramon Bautista, a TV celebrity and a host of the former radio show, The Brewrats, gave the first testimonial. “Simula nung tinuruan ako ni Stanley Chi na maging suplado, nawala ang ubo ko (Ever since Stanley Chi taught me how to be stuck-up, my cough disappeared),” Bautista said in the video with pokerfaced wit. Obviously meant as a comical testament, Bautista went on to describe how being suplado has gained him more fans and stalkers, and how it eventually cured his skin problems. (Bautista also stepped up later on to write the book’s foreword.) Since then, many other celebrities have given their own hilarious accounts of how Suplado Tips has helped them, some of which were not entirely fictional.



With the book selling like pancakes way before the book launch to be held on the last week of May, PSICOM Publishing Inc.’s Tom Aquitania was more than happy that he asked Chi to write the book. After the undeniable popularity of Stanley Chi’s suplado tips on Facebook and on television’s Front Act (of which Chi was a host), Aquitania asked Chi to compile them into a book. “Stanley’s suplado tips on Facebook has even led to the creation of the Suplado Society of the Philippines, complete with its own suplado oath. All of this, despite being clearly just a pseudo-serious joke, is also an unmistakable sign that Stanley Chi’s suplado tips is something the public will want more of,” Aquitania said.



Stanley Chi, already popular for his quick wit and dry humor, brings candor to a new level through the contemporary Suplado Tips. Chi started showing his knack for comedy when he created the comic strip Chopsticks for Manila Bulletin eight years ago, still being published every Sunday. He went on to become a standup comic and a TV host for the comedy show Front Act.

Lleida: Circulo Verde's Fourth Tower


    Ortigas & Co., one of the country’s premiere developers, unveils another residential high-rise within their flagship development, Circulo Verde.   Lleida, named after a Spanish Catalonian town, is the first tower in phase one to offer units, mostly studio and single bedroom types, which provide more viable investment options for young professionals, empty nesters, and independent individuals. Two- and three-bedroom units are also available for starting families.

Circulo Verde is a 12-hectare property located along Calle Industria in Bagumbayan, Quezon City. Prior to Lleida, OCLP launched three towers comprising phase one of the whole residential project: Majorca, Ibiza, and Seville, all of which have been received favorably by the market and are meeting construction and sales targets. “DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: RODRICK RULES” kicks off one year after the first film, with Greg beginning seventh grade.  Greg has mastered middle school, rid himself of the Cheese Touch, and thinks he’s got it all together.  There’s just one problem: Rodrick is trying to ruin Greg’s life.  “The movie is centered on a classic theme, something most people have been through, which is sibling rivalry,” says producer Brad Simpson. “Every day, Greg probably wishes he were an only child.”

Zachary Gordon, Devon Bostick, Rachael Harris, Robert Capron, Steve Zahn and most of the cast from “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” return.  One key new member of the Wimpy Kid family is director David Bowers (“Flushed Away,” “Astro Boy”), making his live-action feature debut.  “This film was like a family reunion,” says Kinney.  “It felt like coming back for a second year of summer camp.”               
Also central to the story are Greg’s mom and dad, played by Rachael Harris and Steve Zahn.  Being Greg and Rodrick’s parents is no picnic, but mom Susan Heffley is trying to do her best with the men in her life.  “Susan has started writing a parenting column for the local newspaper about her family and she feels like hers should be a model family,” says Harris. “But Susan’s family is not a model family; they’re the Heffleys.”

“Every parent can relate to Susan’s challenges with her son,” says Nina Jacobson. “There’s no relationship that lasts longer than the one with your siblings, and Susan is desperate to get her boys to be closer.   Her husband, Frank is a little skeptical about her efforts to bring the boys together, knowing that Rodrick is not a great influence.  But Susan will do whatever she can to bring them together.

Faith Mission Book 1: A Book to Read this Lent

Faith Mission Book 1:  Mathematical Proofs of the Words of God






When I got an invite for the book launch, I readily accept it as it was like an invitation from God, inviting us to believe in him   again, and maybe, I thought, could answer the question of all humanity, "When will this earth end?"


But after getting into the launch yesterday at Manila Hotel, I got inspired by the author, Mr. Archimedes Fontanos Peńara.   His wife was given a second chance to live which also became his decisive moment.  He started dreaming about God. He was touched by God’s hand and was chosen by God to awaken mankind through God's words through mathematical representations.

Now, the Book Craft Publishing, Inc. also was inspiring.  Mrs. Jovita Diaz-Aquino is the publisher of Book Craft Publishing Co. Inc.  She spoke how God changed her life especially now that the publishing industry is not that stable but through God, she made it.


Yes, I am not a math wizard and I haven't read the entire book yet, but I believe that God is Perfect.  This is what Mrs. Jovita Diaz-Aquino said as she explains how the book was created and even some "end-of-the-world thing" were explained.  But it all boils down to one thing, "God is Perfect."

SM DIGITAL THEATER NORTH EDSA HOSTS THE PREMIERE OF “GNOMEO & JULIET”

SM Digital Theater North Edsa hosted the special advance screening of “Gnomeo & Juliet” last April 12, 2011. It was attended by VIPs, the Press, theatre industry partners, brand partners and other special guests. The said premiere is a culmination of SM Cinema Beyond Entertainment event where guests will be updated with the goings-on at SM Cinema, the largest cinema exhibitor in the country today. 


Aptly set in Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-Upon-Avon, “Gnomeo & Juliet” highlights the heated rivalry between neighbors Mr. Capulet and Miss Montague, who’ve taken their zeal for gardening to a whole new level. Their gardens overflow with kitsch plaster garden gnomes who, when the humans are out of sight, have taken up their respective owner’s non-neighborly behavior. The feud has taken on an even more personal nature with the gnomes, where simply being a Red from the Red Garden or a Blue from the Blue Garden comes with a host of prejudices that most don’t understand, yet fail to question.



“Why gnomes?” asks producer Baker Bloodworth. “Why not gnomes? This story is worth telling; it’s relevant. I think the artwork is joyous and vibrant and colorful and it has Elton John tying it all together.”


Fortunately for the garden gnomes, in addition to an extraordinary soundtrack featuring both new songs and classics from the Elton John-Bernie Taupin library, this version offers an all-new third act—replacing Shakespeare’s tragic conclusion. “I think this is definitely the ending that people always wanted from Romeo and Juliet,” says Emily Blunt, who lends her voice to Juliet (and actually kicked off her career on stage as a more traditional Juliet at the 2002 Chichester Festival). James McAvoy, incidentally, provides the voice of Gnomeo.

“The theme of the movie is that love can overcome hate; that’s universal,” adds Bloodworth. “It plays to everybody. We aim to entertain people and to send them out the door with something to think about.”
But what would Shakespeare think?
“He was a great storyteller,” says Bloodworth. “I expect he’d have good fun with this.”

Pacific Global Hospitality Institute: Gateway to International Five-Star Hospitality Industry



When I was in college, I always ask myself why do I need to take subjects that are not related to my course.  College years will be shorter and I can have a job immediately.  I was a working student then and I cannot handle work and studies at the same time so I decided to take a vocational course.


I took up medical transcription and landed on the right job, a medical transcriptionist.  That is for the medical field, but now for those aspiring chefs, here's a school and training institution that serves as a gateway for its graduates to become part of the five-star hospitality industries in just as short as 2 months.








We went to a school tour during the press launch held at Tri-Place Hotel in Quezon City (where the school is also located) on April 9, 2011.  Although the interiors of the school is not yet finished, we have already seen the high quality standards of their facilities.

Blued Clothing Company First Stylepreneurs: Southville International College Studes


I posted about BLUED’s search for their first ever batch of stylepreneurs last December and now is the time for the revelation.


The BLUED Stylepreneur hopefuls from Southville International College, Lyceum of the Philippines University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, and University of Sto. Tomas presented to us their own fashion lines at the Blued’s fashion show in Trinoma Activity Center last March.


 





The fashion entrepreneurs were judged by Brad Geiser, the managing director of Geiser Maclang Marketing Communications, Inc.; Pam Gonzales, fashion PR consultant; Louis Claparols, president of the Young Designer’s Guild of the Philippines; Jon Rajo, VP for corporate branding and communications of Bayan Telecommunications and newly elected president of Philippines Association of National Advertisers and BLUED President Benzon Tan.





In the end, Southville International College enterprising students were hailed as Blued’s Stylepreneurs.  They will be given a chance to join an internship program under BLUED, receive BLUED premium items, and most importantly to get the head start to launch their own BLUED collection.

BIG MOMMA's Like Father, Like Son Premieres at SM Megamall


Last April 7, I was invited by SM Cinema to watch Big Mommas 3:  Like Father, Like Son at SM Megamall Cinema 6.  But before that, I've seen first the trailer.  The trailer seems to me "it's-like-a-not-so-good-to-watch" movie until the time of the advance screening from 20th Century Fox, SM Cinema, and 97.9 Home Radio.

They reinvent the movie franchise.  The film makers opened the latest film up to an audience untapped by Big Mommas 1 and 2.  Essentially not making something that is not a shadow of the first two movies.

I agree to what they have done.  It not just an ordinary comedy movie anymore.  Giving importance to family relationships and friendship, building trust, and respect are some that I just learned from the movie and laugh at the same time.

Habitat Launches 4-year Campaign

Celebrity Ambassadors, private, business, government and youth sector rise to challenge towards social responsibility

On March 12, 2011 (Saturday), Habitat for Humanity Philippines proudly launched its massive social responsibility campaign entitled, “I Build...What Will You Build?”. The campaign period is in line with Habitat’s upcoming silver anniversary in 2013. Over the years, Habitat has built over 32,000 homes for families in need in 22 provinces across the Philippines. The country’s housing needs, however, are immense, and continue to increase each year. Currently, more than four million families or 20 million individuals are without a home. Habitat aims to build over 70,000 homes by 2015. The houses that will be built are for the following programs: Disaster Response and Risk Mitigation, Urban Renewal and Development, Peace Build, and Housing for Public Servants.




Habitat expresses thanks in its 23 years of existence, families in need were given the chance at better lives because of Habitat and its partners. As a gesture of gratitude, Habitat showcased an activity that gave volunteers, donors and advocates the chance to meet other like-minded individuals at the Greenbelt 5 Fashion Walk. The audience was treated to a special dance performance by Steps Dance Studio followed by a touching presentation on the impoverished Filipino’s “This is a Familiar Story” – a look into the vicious cycle that keeps underprivileged families trapped in a world of poverty. The story showed the current state of poverty in the country and how easy it is for more privileged citizens to help improve their lives simply by extending a helping hand.

Diverse advocates and ambassadors for Habitat in a show of faith towards one mission, individuals and groups from different sectors have signed up to rally for Habitat’s vision of providing homes for Filipino families in need. Celebrity ambassadors have committed to become the voice of the organization and to help inform the public about how to make a difference through Habitat. Key personalities from the news and entertainment industry have offered their support and commitment statements at the launch: theatre actress Cris Villonco and Star Magic’s Matteo Guidicelli, who are Habitat’s Youth Ambassadors; Habitat Youth Council founder Alexandra Eduque,  basketball sensation Chris Tiu, GMA news anchor Arnold Clavio, ABS CBN award-winning broadcaster Karen Davila, model/actor Derek Ramsay and TV host Kuya Kim Atienza as Habitat Ambassadors; and Queen of All Media Ms. Kris Aquino as the Habitat Nation-builder ambassador. Ms. Aquino surprised Mr. Zobel de Ayala with her donation to build six houses. A tribute to the late President Corazon Aquino demonstrated the former president’s dedication and passion for nation building and transformation. Attendees pledged their own “I Build…” commitment statements through a photo opportunity sponsored by iFlick Photo Booth. Habitat celebrated the commitment of its Prime Movers in a special gathering with “I Build…” campaign Chairman and Habitat for Humanity International Board of Trustees member Mr. Fernando Zobel de Ayala at Chateau.
